JOIN THE NEW CIVIL DEFENCE MUSIC CORPS – REVIVE AND CELEBRATE OUR MUSICAL HERITAGE!
Introduction
The UK boasts a rich musical heritage, from the pipes of the Highlands and the harps of Ireland to the voices of Wales and the brass bands of England. These traditions have united communities through both challenging and joyous times. Let’s not forget the diverse styles in between, from classical orchestras to pop bands.
Over the centuries, our musical traditions have thrived through both amateur and professional ensembles, from soloists to massed military bands. However, modern society is witnessing a decline in these traditions, especially in non-professional circles.
Do you remember the grand massed band performances at events like the Royal Tournament, Wembley Pageant, and Luton Pageant? While such events are now rare, with only a few like the Horse Guards and Edinburgh Tattoo remaining, we aim to revive this tradition.
The UK’s tradition of marching and concert bands has enriched many communities and events. While military bands of the army, air force, and marines continue to highlight this style, civilian bands have dwindled. The number of army bands has reduced from 69 to just 14, plus 19 reserve bands, impacting public relations and recruitment efforts.
Our Chief Officer, with a background in professional military music and experience in setting up and running reserve and amateur bands, understands the challenges faced by amateur and voluntary bands.
Benefits of Joining
Joining the Corps as both a structured charity and organisation offers numerous benefits for amateur bands, including:
- Financial Benefits
- Gift Aid: Bands can reclaim tax on donations from UK taxpayers, increasing the value of donations by 25%.
- Grants and Funding: Many local authorities and sponsors prefer to fund registered charities, opening up more opportunities for financial support.
- Credibility and Trust
- Increased Credibility: Being part of a registered charity can enhance the band’s reputation, making it easier to attract members, audiences, and sponsors.
- Public Confidence: A formal structure reassures the public and potential donors that the band is well-managed and accountable.
- Organisational Support
- Governance and Structure: The Corps provides a clear governance structure, helping to define roles, responsibilities, and decision-making processes.
- Legal and Administrative Support: Access to resources and advice on legal and administrative matters can help the band operate more efficiently.
- Community, Camaraderie, and Networking
- Community Engagement: Being part of a charity can enhance the band’s ability to engage with the community and participate in local events.
- Camaraderie: Enabling closer relationships with other likeminded musicians inside the ensemble and with other bands, without unnecessary concerns of competition or poaching.
- Networking Opportunities: The Corps networks with other organisations and groups, particularly form the Council of Civil Defence, providing opportunities for collaboration and support.
- Sustainability and Growth
- Long-term Stability: A formal structure can help ensure the band’s sustainability and growth, providing a solid foundation for future development.
- Volunteer and Member Recruitment: Enhanced credibility and support can make it easier to recruit and retain volunteers and members.

- Facilities and Equipment: Being part of the Corps can improve access to better facilities and equipment through grants and donations.
Youth Involvement
More than most, the Corps feels that the Youth are paramount to our future, but we are not currently ready to take individual youth musicians. However, Youth Bands are very much welcome to join the Music Corps. In reality, the Youth Bands could become the starting point for the Corps’ ‘Civil Cadet Corps’.
